Introduction – Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre

This is not the infamous 1929 Chicago gangland slaying you may know of in which Al Capone was the suspected mastermind. No, this is the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre held annually by the Vancouver Theatresports League – an international improvisational competition whereby teams slay each other sometimes with spontaneous sarcasm, other times with brazen bafoonery and often times with ruthless ridicule but always with wiley wit… Check it out if you can – they’ll kill you with laughter!

The following is a true story that happened in 2011 last year.

Scene 1 – The Battle

CUT TO: Tuesday, January 18. Twitterer @dengshot (aka the Unscripted Mind) sits at her computer, like she does most evenings, poring through her Timeline Tweets for her daily dose of current events. Her eyes widen and eyebrows raise as she notices a contest by @TicketsTonight for tickets to the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre at the new Improv Center on Granville Island. She had not been to an improv comedy show in years. The Unscripted Mind smiles and thinks to herself “Hmmm, a contest to see a contest! Challenge on!” Within moments she submits her entry by re-tweeting the message as instructed but is quickly distracted by the next 140 character dispatch on her monitor.

Scene 2 – Battle Victory

CUT TO: Wednesday, January 19. We find @dengshot poised once again at her computer that evening scanning the day’s Twitter news. She sees her name scroll up through the Timeline and does a double-take. She can’t believe it! It’s an announcement with instructions “@dengshot is today’s winner. You+1 are going to the Improv Center 2mrw. Pls arr by 7:15; tix at the door.” The Unscripted Mind had completely forgotten about the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre tickets contest and was thrilled at her victory. It was short notice so she quickly sent out the call to some friends to join her the following evening on a “first come first served” basis. It is late. She yawns and powers off the computer before hitting the sack.

Scene 3 – The Princess and the Plea

CUT TO: Thursday, January 20, 8AM. The Unscripted Mind is roused from her deep slumber by a dull pain filling the space between the back of her eyes and the back of her skull. She opens her eyes and the pressure in her head starts to balloon. It is the start of a migraine. Closing her eyes, the tension eases somewhat and she hopes a little shut eye will relieve the pain as it occasionally does.

Five hours later @dengshot awakens from her sleep and still feels the pressure behind the eyes but much less. She rolls out of bed and logs on to her computer to find a couple replies from friends who are too busy to go. She is a little worried there’ll be no takers and sends out a few more invites to other friends. As the next two hours tick by, a queasiness sets in and the headache worsens once again. The Unscripted Mind struggles onward and hopes the nausea will pass but instead takes on a greener hue by the minute. She has just enough will and energy to offer the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre tickets to anyone who wants to enjoy spirited improvisational sparring. At this point she can only think about becoming horizontal and attempts to sleep off the migraine one more time.

The time on the clock shows 7PM when the Unscripted Mind opens her eyes and stumbles out of bed again. The churning in her stomach has eased off a bit and although the vice like grip on her brain has relinquished some of it’s power she is still unable to shake it. There have been no takers for the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre tickets and the show starts in moments. Because @dengshot doesn’t want to loose an opportunity to experience an exciting massacre she composes a plea to the Vancouver TheatreSports League that even Saint Valentine’s couldn’t refuse! Or could he?

Dear St. Valentine,

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Princess Leia aka Donna Eng. A big thanks to you & Tickets Tonight for bestowing upon me a pair of tickets for tonight’s ruthless skirmish. Now that’s unrequited love!

I was flushed with excitement to see the bloody massacre but became disheartened when I developed a migraine late this afternoon. I contacted everyone in my kingdom to see if anyone else would be titillated to witness some cutting wit and penetrating malevolence but unfortunately no heartless soul was available on such short notice (

I was sooo looking forward to experiencing the venomous love and carnage of the duelling teams! I know it’s a long shot from where I lay in bed, with pounding head, to strike my cupid’s arrow upon your warm tender heart but is there any possible way to swap for another night?

It is only morning and she anticipates one is still forthcoming from the Vancouver TheatreSports League. To her delight an email chimes in mid-afternoon. She reads it slowly. Apparently her plea made it’s round through the organization before a decision was made…

I hope that you are feeling better today. Unfortunately, we have a no refund, no return, no exchange policy on all of our tickets. I am sorry that you weren’t able to make it. Hopefully you’ll be able to make it another time.

Journey to Eureka! Part Two

Logged lots of miles on my third day – saw incredible scenery, crazy wood art, a gray whale, feasted on food made with heart and soul and met lots of friendly folks! It’s been such an eventful day that I’ve covered it in two posts. This being part II with pictures at the bottom… Having left the wacky Burl Gallery in Kerby, Oregon I headed towards my first seaside destination – Crescent City, California! The beach is as pretty as I remember it but not very crowded possibly due to the cooler temperatures that hit the coast this weekend (just my luck) and small surf.

The next thing along Hwy 101 that caught my eye was a pair of gold lions on the Klamath River Bridge over… you guessed it, the Klamath River! As I posed for a picture with one of the lions I noticed a crowd at the other end looking over the bridge. My curiosity got the best of me so I hoofed it over to the other end. The sidewalk is so narrow you have to walk single file and the not so co-ordinated people hung on to the bridge railing. The police patrolled back and forth on the bridge to ensure the crowd didn’t step off into oncoming traffic. On the water were some speed boats and jet skiers that I didn’t think much of as it’s a daily view from my apartment. I stayed to enjoy the valley view just the same but the surprise came in the second video – a gray whale we figured was at least 30 feet long!

I made one more stop on the way to Eureka where I would rest up for the evening. The Redwood National Park is one of very few places inhabited by Roosevelt Elk and Elk Meadows in the park is a popular place to view these majestic beasts. I spoke with a couple who witnessed a herd a few minutes into the trail and said it was worth my while to take a walk. Unfortunately, it was not my day for elk. That’s okay, I was happy with my gray whale.

Once in Eureka, I secured a crappy motel room that had nothing in it after vacating a slightly better, cheaper one with cockroaches. I don’t know which was worse but I’m on somewhat of a budget so cie la vie. Now off for a late supper.

One of my favorite things about travelling is eating – eating to experience the local culture whether in a different country or just a neighboring city – so I prefer to visit local, independent restaurants over established chains but it’s a crap shoot whether you end up with a gastronomic experience or a gaseous one. lol Once in awhile you come across a place you are instantly drawn to. Bless My Soul Cafe is another one of those places.

It is in an old home with a garden converted into a restaurant nestled amongst plain jane businesses. It was 10 o’clock and closing time when I peered in the doorway but a woman working a table invited me in to have a seat. Yay! The place just has that warm, friendly soulful feel both inside and out. It’s not a guarantee but it is a good sign when people are passionate about their food, customers and their business. And when the blues legend Taj Mahal touts it as having the best food in the world, well, you pay attention.

Bless My Soul Cafe is run by Sweet Mamma Jannise, her daughter and son-in-law. The cafe sources organic and uses local producers whenever possible in order to return money back into the local economy. They make their own delicious sauces and dressings and bottle five of them for sale in stores. Mamma is a sweetheart personally visiting and chatting with each table. Oh! And you know Mamma Jannise is alright because she has friends in Vancouver and tried to move her family here in the 70′s

The Sticky Love Sauce Chicken Breast is a house favorite. It was tender and moist and topped with the homemade mango fruit mustard sauce. The organic house salad is also served with a homemade dressing, a little tangy and unfortunately not for sale. Mamma’s corn muffin is light not dense and slightly sweet just the way I like it. I haven’t had Soul food this good in Vancouver. The closest I remember having is Big Al’s from a long time ago but maybe there’s others now? Point me in the direction if you know of any in Vancouver!

Well that concludes my evening in Eureka, California. Tomorrow I’m heading for the 32 mile Avenue of the Giants through redwood forests!

Journey to Eureka! Part One

Day three of the trip has been so eventful that I’ve split my coverage into two posts. This being part I with pictures at the bottom… Logged lots of miles, saw incredible scenery, crazy wood art, a gray whale, feasted on food made with heart and soul and met lots of friendly folks! The highway scenery was spectacular as all signs of city busyness fell behind me in Eugene and the temperature rose to 30 degrees. Reminds me a bit of going to Kelowna actually.

After a light continental breakfast at the hotel I was famished by lunch time. Didn’t want any boring, processed chain restaurant food when I happened across a highway sign “Heaven on Earth”. Well, how could I resist that? It is is literally little spot of heaven on earth in the middle of nowhere off Exit 86 I-5 in Oregon (there’s no town name)!

It’s a good ol’ country bakery and restaurant and is famous for their delicious cinnamon rolls – definitely sharesy size at three pounds and $12.99 each! And what a bakery it is with gorgeous cakes, cookies, pies and more. I was fortunate enough to arrive for their first annual Cinnamon Roll Party! They French batter pieces of the cinnamon rolls (yes, you read that right) and then you get to top it with you choice of over 30 toppings. I went with the savories bacon and sausage as I have to watch my glucose levels. No, this was not my lunch but rather, an epilogue. *I asked for only a sample size – good thing as I had no room left after lunch.

The special of the day featured homemade meatloaf fresh out of the oven. Oooh that’s when meatloaf is best eaten! And that’s what I call good marketing. I’m finicky about meatloaf so I rarely order it and prefer to make my own but today I felt like homey comfort food and took a chance. And ooh yeah I was not disappointed! It hit the spot – hearty, not too dense yet moist and topped with mushrooms, gravy and onions.

Heaven brews a variety of flavours of ice teas everyday. Lisa’s green apple ice tea is amazing, almost like biting into one. I love American ice teas because they’re fresh brewed and never pre-sweetened so you can embellish them anyway you want unlike our Canadian version made from a mix and way to sweet (pay heed Canada!) – maybe that’s why we list it alongside the soda pops… I’d love to try the other things on their menu but unfortunately it’s not on my route back to Vancouver – guess that means I’ll have to make another trip ;o)

After a filling lunch I was anxious to get back on the road. I wanted to get into California today so I skipped past one of my favorite towns, Grants Pass (to be added to the Heaven on Earth trip). I should note there are lots of wood art galleries dotted along Hwy 199 and Hwy 101 and I’m not a fan of wood art by any means. I’ve tried to like the stuff and I can appreciate a few of the good pieces out there but I just think there’s a lot much more lousy stuff so all the wood galleries dotting the highways don’t register on my radar anymore. The Burl Gallery located in Kerby, Oregon (a former gold mining town south of Grants Pass with a population of 400) looks like another unasuming wood art shop along the highway but believe me it’s far from ordinary.

If it weren’t for a huge and bizarre welcome sign, if you can call it that, I would have driven right past the place. The fountain like heap streaming with bright purple water compelled me to pull over for a closer look and a photo. What was to be a picture or two turned into dozens and dozens as I saw more and more wonderful and whimsical burled wood creations around every corner – from garden decorations to treehouses, from lamps to rocking horses, from plaques to statues and more (you gotta see it to believe it).

The gallery and yard is owned by 77 year old Harry Shinerock and is a place where artists gather to create and carve from burled wood. They also have some pottery and metalwork thrown into the mix. The property doesn’t look like much from the road but it is deceivingly large and definitely worth finding! I’ve only posted here a tiny sampling of what I saw.

Can It Get Any Slower Getting To Eugene, Oregon?

After a girls late night chat session I pried my eyes open the next morning. I was hungry in Seattle and needed some sustanence to fuel me for the long day ahead – want to make up lost ground on the journey to San Fran. That meant another eating opportunity! Hello, oyster breakfast platter! Eeewww was my first reaction when the waitress first offered it but on second thought, why not!

The Bay Cafe is a favorite Seattle brunch spot (my cousin’s girlfriend’s too) and popular seafood restaurant on the waterfront so the oyster breakfast would be the culmination of both worlds. I will post additional pictures when I return home as the restaurant pix are stuck in the camera. *Note to self: physically test all power cords and adapter when packing and make sure to take out memory card from laptop*. As a forethought (or in hindsight depending how you look at it lol) I shopped for a power inverter for all my gizmos before heading out on the road again i.e. another delayed start…

The goal for the day was to get to Grants Pass, Oregon for a night of camping but after driving six hours straight I made it only into Eugene last night. OMG the rush hour through Portland is as hellish as Seattle’s. Had a quick taco truck dinner at Dos Banderas (don’t get the wrong idea, it was good) and negotiated a nice, clean room at Campus Inn. Kinda glad I didn’t have to pitch a tent after all!

Well, it’s the next morning and day two has come and gone. Wish I had more time to explore Eugene! It’s a funky university town with a large variety of food spots and a plethora of arts and adventures. And all the people are so friendly whether in the service industry or on the street. I’m a full day behind schedule but it’s warm and sunny and I’m packed and ready to leave Eugene, Oregon.

California, here I come!

On the Slow Road to San Francisco

Welcome to the quasi journal of my two week round trip road adventure from Vancouver, BC to San Francisco, CA. It’s gone through a number of route changes but the final version is a figure eight. The plan is to start down I-5 to Medford, Oregon and then cut across and down the California coast to San Fran, chill for a few days before heading north up I-5 for a weekend in Ashland, the one fixed variable in the journey, then swinging back out to the shoreline and head home via the Oregon coast.

After a late start leaving Vancouver today, a turnaround in White Rock and an even later start I did not make it to my goal of Eugene, Oregon. Not even to Portland or even close to the Oregon border. Good thing I don’t have a set schedule!
While I was filling up at a gas station in Bellingham that doesn’t take credit cards. Who the heck refuses money? I ended up using some of the hard US$ cash I was saving for more exciting purchases. Grrrr! I digress. I realized it would be well past dinner time if I were to get to the Oregon border – too late & too tired for me to find a place to lay my weary head. Luckily, a call to my cousin in Seattle landed me a great food adventure, internet access and a comfy bed!

I highly recommend both places for great food and great vibes if you’re ever in Seattle! Don’t be intimidated by all the bikers and tats at Slim’s – they’re all good shits. In the meantime, good night ’til tomorrow )

Kayaking And Stand Up Paddling Regatta In English Bay, Vancouver

It’s kayaking season in Vancouver! I caught & videoed this train of kayakers and stand up paddlers below heading out of False Creek into English Bay. Usually I see one to three kayaks paddling out together so there was definitely something special going on. Couldn’t tell if it was a regatta or a caravan but the kayaks and stand up paddle boards (SUPs) made for a colourful sight.

Touring on water gives you a different perspective of Vancouver because you can see the city skyline framed by ocean and the Coast Mountains. It’s a nice relaxing way to spend an hour or a day and you may even glimpse some marine wildlife. People have been kayaking in and around Vancouver for years but have only recently embraced stand up paddling. It is the newest, fastest growing sport in the world with it’s origins rooted in the early 1960′s in Waikiki. The Hawaiian surf instructors would use their longboards and paddles to make it easier to teach and take photos of their students. Surfers would later use it to cross-train when the waves were flat.

Almost anyone can kayak or stand up paddle so you can easily try it and decide if you like it before investing in it as a sport. Equipment rentals, lessons and tours are available at the following places in the Greater Vancouver area (listed alphabetically):

Kilometre 18 at the 2011 BMO Vancouver Marathon

The weather turned out great for the roughly 15,000 participants of the BMO Vancouver Marathon today! The sun was out and the air was still brisk.

The annual BMO Vancouver Marathon is held on the first Sunday in May each year. It is Canada’s second largest international marathon and has been around since 1972. The original 1972 “British Columbia Marathon” course went around Stanley Park five times and there were only 46 entrants. This race event is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon drawing elite and recreational athletes from around the world – with 41 countries in 2009!

Kilometre 18 of the race course passes by my apartment so I went down to the street to check out the action. The course was well run with volunteers directing the marathoners and half marathoners and volunteers cheering and offering help. There were coaches roaming the course giving support and words of encouragement to team members. Runners came in all shapes and sizes, ages and colour. They ran independently or for running groups or organizations such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, Team “ish”, Running Room, people running for Japan and many, many more. I especially loved the colourful outfits that some of the runners were wearing.

With so many participants I did manage to spot one of my best friends looking spry and relatively fresh at kilometre 18. That’s what dedicated training will do! I’m still learning about photography and my camera so I was taking lots of different shots. The lighting was a bit of a challenge as it was sunny with lots of shadows cast by surrounding buildings but I think they still turned out pretty good.

A driver is stuck in a traffic jam going into downtown Ottawa. Nothing is moving north or south. Suddenly a man knocks on his window.

The driver rolls down his window and asks, “What happened? What’s the hold-up?”

“Terrorists have kidnapped Michael Ignatieff, Gilles Duceppe, Elizabeth May, Prime Minister Harper and Jack Layton. They are asking for a ten million dollar ransom… Otherwise, they are going to douse them with gasoline and set them on fire. We are going from car to car, taking up a collection.”

The driver asks, “On average, how much is everyone giving?”

“About a litre…”

All kidding aside, we Canadians are fortunate to have suffrage unlike many countries that have recently fought for or are currently fighting for democray like Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Zimbabwe and Bahrain to name a few. As most of you know, a federal election has been called for Monday May 2, 2011. The lawn signs are starting to pop up everywhere I go now.

Coconut Vanilla Clusters: A Little Bit Of Heaven And A Food Blog

I’ve made these Coconut Vanilla Clusters from one of my favorite blogs iheartwellness.com a few times now and they are simply amazing and yet incredibly healthy! So much so that I had to share them with you. Okay, not the actual treats lol but the experience – unless you’re lucky enough to be over at my place when I make another batch. Oh and I promise you, I will!

Originally I wasn’t going to put any food posts here because I was saving it all for a dedicated food blog which has yet to materialize. I resolve to get organized and make that happen sometime this year. So until then, you the readers of the Unscripted Mind, get to preview some of my epicurean muses!

First, let’s back up a little so I can give you a bit of background on my food lifestyle. I have loved food since I was a little kid and started cooking on my own when I was 10 years young. My love for food comes by honestly. You see, my dad immigrated to Canada, and like many other Chinese immigrants at the time, opened up a Chinese restaurant in the 60′s. I love all ethnicity of foods and am constantly searching out new epicurean delights. I’m not vegetarian nor do I have food allergies (hooray) but I am into health and fitness and thus, try to incorporate healthy eating into my lifestyle.

So what about those tantillizing little clusters you ask… They are fantastic for when you need a chocolate fix, after a workout when you need a hit of energy or anytime you want an indulgence. I want to emphasize how healthy, amazingly tasty and simple these are – you’d never know they are low in sugar (ocurring in the chocolate), full of protein, vegan, nut and gluten free and this is a very kid friendly recipe too. Heck, make double or triple batches! I hope you enjoy these as much as I do!

Coconut Vanilla Clusters

I’ve modified the original recipe ever so slightly for my preferences – there’s only a few ingredients after all ;o) If you don’t have agave nectar, try some honey or hey, even maple syrup. This is such a versatile recipe you can get creative with so many different ingredients too. Try adding a little bit of flax or hemp seeds, chopped cranberries or raisins. The sky’s the limit!

Makes 6

Ingredients:
2 tbsp pumpkin seeds
2 tbsp sunflower seeds
3 tbsp unsweetened coconut
2 tsp coconut oil (heaping)
1/2 tsp agave nectar
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup dark chocolate chips – melted

Instructions:
1. Mix all seeds, coconut, coconut oil, agave nectar and vanilla in a bowl.

2. Drop into slightly rounded tablespoon size clusters on a parchment lined sheet or little baking cups. Place in the freezer for 20 minutes.

3. While the clusters are in the freezer, melt the chocolate chips in a little dish in the microwave.

4. Coat each cluster with a dab of melted chocolate and place back in the freezer to harden.

5. Serve and enjoy!
